Hungry Camel
About This Spot
Stepping into Hungry Camel at George Central feels like entering a warmly familiar nook where life slows just enough to savor simple pleasures. This cozy café and local eatery hums with a gentle, unhurried rhythm — a place where regulars exchange nods over well-loved tables, and the owners move with the easy familiarity of people who truly know their neighborhood.
The space itself invites lingering: a playful blend of quirky charm and homely touches reflecting its South African roots with a wink of unexpected character. It’s the kind of spot where the light filters softly through windows, casting a welcoming glow on familiar, farm-style accents that speak to comfort rather than flash.
Menus here aren’t just lists but stories told through the flavors you’ll find, from breakfast served all day to heartier farm-inspired meals. The dishes are generously honest — like perfectly crisped French toast draped in syrup and bacon, or a chicken schnitzel that tastes like a well-kept family secret. Breakfast and lunch unfold as moments to be savored, wrapped in the casual sincerity of a place that values quality without fuss.
Behind the counter, the owners’ presence adds a human layer to the experience, turning each visit into a quietly personal occasion rather than a transactional one. This connection stands out: attentive service without pretense, paired with good food that tastes like it was made with someone in mind.
Hungry Camel is a gentle refuge in the busy heart of George — a lively yet relaxed hideaway where the pace invites you to pause, order a chai latte or a hearty wrap, and feel seen as part of a small but welcoming community. It’s a place for those who appreciate food with character and a warmly familiar atmosphere, blending the everyday with a subtle touch of delight.

Great place, good prices and was helped directly by the owner who runs the restaurant. This means we got decent farm style whole tasting food, unlike your regular franchised restaurants, and good service to go with it.. what more could you ask for.

What a lovely quaint coffee shop. Breakfast (French Toast with bacon & syrup) is so delicious. They serve it all day too. The owners are super friendly. I will definitely be back.

I absolutely adore this shop! The decor can only be described as Dubai-kitsch meets South African platteland. The owners are really nice and they seem to have a good base of regular customers who frequent the cafe. The food (I had the toast with mince and an egg) was deliciously hearty. The coffee (Peacock brand) was less inspiring. Nevertheless, this is a lovely coffee shop - a quirky little oasis in a desert of generic coffee shops.

Lovely family run businesses, Barry and Maria both own and work in the restaurant. Fun Camel theme, really enjoy chicken Schnitzel crab stick and salad. Overall yummy food at a reasonable price, perfect location in town center.

Hungry Camel restaurant is a charming, family-run business that truly knows how to deliver an exceptional breakfast experience. This is honestly the freshest, most mouthwatering breakfast I've ever come across. The ingredients are incredibly fresh, and every bite is bursting with flavor. Each dish is perfectly prepared, making every mouthful an absolute delight. If you're searching for a breakfast spot that will leave a lasting impression, Hungry Camel is the place to go!

This restaurant was truly so wholesome! I believe one of the owners helped us with our order, she was amazingly kind and made us feel so welcome. The decor of the restaurant is also unique, very interesting to explore and reminded me of 'home' in the Middle East. The variety of food they have is probably one of the most impressive things to me, there is such a diverse choice of dishes that (I believe) speak for different cultures, dishes I find hard to get in the Garden route. Thanks so much for our experience here!
